Review this article before you configure AI Activate. ## Your data and compliance responsibilities You control what AI Activate can access by choosing what to put in scope and activate. AI Activate does not filter, classify, or redact data based on content; you are responsible for deciding what goes in scope and for meeting your own compliance obligations. AI Activate runs in the United States, so activation and queries are processed in the United States regardless of where your cloud storage is located. Take this into account when you assess your data residency and compliance obligations. See [Prerequisites](/v1/docs/ai-activate-prerequisites). ## Costs billed by your cloud provider Depending on how your cloud storage is configured, your cloud provider might bill you for the data that AI Activate reads. These are charges from your cloud provider, not from Nasuni. The most common situations are below. **Data transfer** For volumes backed by AWS, Nasuni works to minimize cross-region data transfer, but cannot guarantee that cross-region data transfer does not occur. Because AI Activate runs in the United States, expect data transfer charges for AWS volumes whose storage is in a region outside the United States. For volumes backed by Azure, expect data transfer charges from your cloud provider. **Archival and infrequent-access storage** AI Activate reads data directly from your cloud object storage. If any of your data resides in an archival or infrequent-access storage class (for example, Amazon S3 Glacier storage classes or Azure Archive or Cool tiers) and an operation accesses that data, your cloud provider might bill you retrieval, access, or early-deletion fees. Nasuni cannot determine in advance which operations incur these charges or the charge amounts. These fees can apply to any operation that accesses your storage. The Volume Inventory, which catalogs your files, and Content Activation, which reads file contents, can both incur these fees. Your cloud provider sets these charges. **Nasuni is not responsible for cloud provider charges** Your agreement with your cloud provider governs egress, data transfer, retrieval, and access charges. You are responsible for these charges. Nasuni is not responsible for charges from your cloud provider. ## Next When you understand your responsibilities and the possible charges, continue to [Volume Inventory and Scoping](/v1/docs/ai-activate-volume-inventory-and-scoping).
