Catalog and scope one volume at a time. Repeat these steps for each volume you want to use. > [!NOTE] > ***Note:*** *Running a Volume Inventory and activating content both read from your cloud object storage and can result in charges from your cloud provider. Review* [*Costs and Data Responsibilities*](/v1/docs/ai-activate-cost-and-data-responsibilities) *before you begin.* ## Open AI Activate in the Portal Sign in to the [Nasuni Portal](http://portal.nasuni.com) and open the **AI Activate** section. Use the **AI Activate** section to inventory, scope, and activate your volumes. **AI Activate** appears in the Portal only after your account is licensed for AI Activate. If you do not see the **AI Activate** section, your account is not yet licensed. See [Prerequisites](/v1/docs/ai-activate-prerequisites) or contact your Nasuni account team. ![Navigation menu for Nasuni with highlighted AI Activate option.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-21 at 09.58.26.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) ## Start a Volume Inventory To catalog a volume, start a Volume Inventory for it. 1. In the Portal, navigate to the **AI Activate** section, and then select **Start Volume Inventory**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/ai-activate-activation-dashboard-overview.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) 2. Select the volume you want to inventory. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/ai-activate-inventory-volume-selection-interface.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) 1. Eligible volumes available for selection must meet all [prerequisites](/v1/docs/ai-activate-prerequisites#volume-requirements). 2. If the volume is backed by Azure Blob Storage, select the Azure region where the volume's storage account is located. The Azure region selection does not apply to volumes in AWS S3. 3. The inventory then runs in the background. Nasuni cannot estimate the inventory duration because the volume's size and contents are not known until the inventory finishes. Because the inventory runs asynchronously: - The volume shows **Volume Inventory in Progress** until the inventory finishes. - Check the volume's status in the Portal until the inventory finishes. When the inventory is complete, you can scope the volume. For the full set of statuses that a volume can show, see [Volume statuses](/v1/docs/ai-activate-overview#volume-statuses). The **Activation Dashboard** displays activated volumes and current volume statuses for management. ![Activation dashboard displaying activated volumes and their current status for management.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-21 at 10.19.14.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) ## Scope the volume “Scoping” lets you choose which parts of the volume AI Activate makes available by including and excluding paths. 1. On the inventoried volume click the ellipses … and then choose **Configure Activation**. ![Dashboard displaying activated volumes with statuses and options for managing activations.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-21 at 10.24.19.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) 2. Set the paths to include and exclude within the volume. ![Configuration settings for activating directories and managing subscription impacts in AI Activate.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-21 at 10.28.02.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) As you adjust your include and exclude paths, the Portal recalculates a live estimate in the same view, so that you can see the effect of each change before you commit to Activating. ![Configuration settings for including and excluding directories in AI Activate subscription.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-21 at 10.30.47.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) ## Read your estimated capacity For the scope you have defined, the Portal shows a live estimate split into two figures: - Estimated Content Activated Files. These are the files whose content can be activated. Content Activated Files are billable and count against your subscribed capacity. - Estimated Metadata Only Files. These are files that stay in scope and remain visible to your AI tool by name, the folder they are in, and attributes. However, AI Activate does not activate the file contents, and Metadata Only Files incur no charge. The estimate also compares your estimated Content Activated Files against your available subscribed capacity, so you can see whether you have enough capacity for the scope you have defined. ![Overview of AI Activate subscription usage and remaining file capacity details.](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-09-24 at 10.07.09.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-15T02%3A40%3A42Z&se=2026-10-15T03%3A40%3A42Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=uBRPp5bMHyCBX018PpwL8VxJt%2Fslmdl0GCBlB2%2BMxoA%3D) If your Content Activated Files fit within your capacity, then you are ready to activate. If the Content Activated Files do not fit within your capacity, use the estimate to purchase the capacity you need. Activation requires sufficient capacity; see [Activate your content](/v1/docs/ai-activate-activate-your-content). ## Estimates can change at activation The figures displayed while scoping are estimates, and the final counts can differ after activation runs. Two factors can cause the difference: - Your volume might change between the time you scope and the time you activate, as files are added, edited, or removed. - A file that the estimate counts as a Content Activated File might not activate, for example, a scanned PDF. If the file does not activate, the file stays in scope as a Metadata Only File instead. Your actual number of Content Activated Files after activation, not the estimate, is what counts against your subscribed capacity. Treat the estimate as a close guide for sizing your purchase, not an exact final count. If the final count exceeds your subscribed capacity, even if the estimate was within your subscribed capacity, AI Activate does not stop your activation. The overage counts as organic growth: your service continues, and your Nasuni account team works with you to expand your subscription. Capacity works the same way as your content grows over time. See [Activate Your Content](/v1/docs/ai-activate-activate-your-content) for more. ## Decide your capacity and continue How you proceed depends on your capacity. **If you already hold enough capacity.** You are ready to activate. The **Activate Volume** button is in this same scoping view, and activating commits your scope and starts processing your content. See [Activate Your Content](/v1/docs/ai-activate-activate-your-content) for the activation step and what to expect. **If you need to purchase capacity first.** Take your estimate to your Nasuni account team and acquire the capacity you need. Then return to the Portal, scope the volume again, and activate. > [!WARNING] > ***Important:*** *Your scope is not saved unless you activate. If you set a scope to size your purchase and then leave without activating, AI Activate does not keep the scope, and you must set the scope again when you return. Because your volume might also change in the meantime, the estimate you see the second time might differ slightly.* ## Next Activate the volume to put your scope into effect. See [Activate Your Content](/v1/docs/ai-activate-activate-your-content).
