Introduction
This document details how Nasuni and its components integrate with and support third-party IT infrastructure technologies, including cloud object storage platforms, hypervisors, and file-sharing protocols.
Applications
In general, Nasuni develops and offers industry-standard NAS Protocols (SMB (CIFS) / NFS). Nasuni adheres to the standard convention of NAS protocols. Nasuni supports all applications that respect NAS protocol standards. Most third-party applications that satisfy such standards work with Nasuni.
Note: We are continuously qualifying Nasuni with new technologies. If you need to use a specific application, verify compatibility with your Sales representative.
To help protect files from cyberattacks and insider threats, Nasuni works with leading auditing and governance applications that analyze the behavior of the people and machines accessing file data, alert on misbehavior, and enforce a least-privilege model.

Hypervisors
Nasuni Edge Appliances can be deployed on your existing virtual infrastructure as virtual machines to transmit new files and file changes and to cache actively used files for high-performance access.
The Nasuni Management Console is a virtual machine deployed on your existing virtual infrastructure to monitor, control, provision, and manage multiple Nasuni Edge Appliances.

Cloud Object Storage
Nasuni’s global file system — UniFS® — is instantiated in your preferred cloud object storage. Typically, a single cloud object storage product is used as the authoritative source for storing all file data and metadata, but some customers choose to distribute their unstructured data across multiple cloud object storage products.
Nasuni Edge Appliances connect to one or more cloud object storage products to securely transmit new files and file changes and to cache actively used files for high-performance access.
Note: We are continuously qualifying Nasuni with new technologies. If you need to use a cloud object storage product not listed here, verify compatibility with your Sales representative.

Windows Distributed File System (DFS)
Windows DFS Namespaces is a role service in Windows Server that enables you to group shared folders located on different servers into one or more logically structured namespaces. This makes it possible to give users a virtual view of shared folders, where a single path leads to files located on multiple servers.
Administrators can configure DFS with Nasuni Edge Appliances to organize SMB (CIFS) shares on different appliances under a single logical network path. Windows DFS is qualified as follows:
Namespace | Mode | Nasuni Release |
stand-alone | Not Apply | 2.0 and later |
domain-based | Windows 2000 Server | 2.0 and later |
domain-based | Windows Server 2008 | 2.0 and later |
NTFS Permissions
NTFS permissions are used to control which users have access to which data and what type of access each user has. NTFS permissions can be applied to SMB (CIFS) shares and folders created by Nasuni Edge Appliances. The NTFS permissions modes behave as follows:
Permission | NTFS Exclusive | NTFS Compatible |
Additive Permissions | Yes | No |
Deny Permissions | Yes | No |
Everyone Permissions | Yes | Yes |
Historical SIDs | Yes | No |
Traverse Permissions | Yes The traverse permission is NOT required from the root of the volume. The traverse permission IS required from the root of the share and intermediate levels for browsing. Directly accessing a subfolder does NOT require traverse permissions. | Yes Traverse permissions ARE required at the root of the volume and intermediate levels for browsing. Directly accessing a subfolder DOES require traverse permissions. |
Unresolved SIDs | Yes | Yes |
Note: Unresolved SIDs (aka orphaned SIDs or ghost SIDs) are supported in Nasuni Edge Appliances. For more details about permissions, see Permissions Best Practices.
Note: You cannot switch from NTFS Exclusive mode to NTFS Compatible mode.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
APIs can be used to automate Nasuni operations through external programs or scripts, export information from Nasuni for advanced reporting and analysis, or integrate with other IT products or systems. Nasuni includes the following APIs:
Mobile devices
Important: The Nasuni Mobile Access app is scheduled for End-of-Life on May 1, 2024. After this date, the Nasuni Mobile Access app will no longer be supported or available from app stores.
Syslog
Syslog is a standard for network devices to send event messages to a logging server – usually known as a Syslog server. The Syslog protocol is supported by a wide range of devices and can be used to log different types of events. The Nasuni Edge Appliance provides Syslog-type reporting, as follows:
Notifications
Audit Events
The following features are not supported:
TCP.
TCP-TLS.
Structured data segments.
Individual notification settings per syslog server.

Maximum Cache Size by Virtual Platform
The maximum cache size for the Nasuni Edge Appliance depends on the total usable capacity of the VM host.
The combined cache and copy-on-write (COW) disks on each Nasuni Edge Appliance should not consume more than 75 percent of the total capacity of the VM host.
The COW disk should be at least 25 percent of the cache disk, up to a maximum of 256 GB.
Nasuni has tested cache sizes up to 36 TB. For a larger cache size, consult Nasuni Technical Support.
Each platform also has its own maximum disk size. However, multiple cache disks can be combined to form the total cache.
Note: To add cache space by configuring additional cache disks, see http://b.link/Nasuni_Adding_Cache_Disks. You might require Nasuni Support.
Note: Caches that are created less than 16 TB can be increased, but never larger than 16 TB. Caches that are created greater than or equal to 16 TB cannot be resized.
Note: The Nasuni Edge Appliance supports physical (pass through) disks for larger cache sizes, up to the maximum disk size supported by the Hyper-V or VMware hosts.
RAM
The maximum amount of RAM that can be configured for a Nasuni Edge Appliance is 128 GB. Any RAM above the limit of 128 GB is ignored.
Encryption
The Nasuni Edge Appliance encrypts data using the OpenPGP encryption protocol, so that data is secured in transit to and at rest in cloud storage. The 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256) encryption is the default encryption.
Encryption key files (used by the Nasuni Edge Appliance and the Nasuni Management Console) should be OpenPGP-compatible.
The Nasuni Edge Appliance supports the IDEA cipher on uploaded encryption keys.

Nasuni Analytics Connector
The Nasuni Analytics Connector creates a temporary copy of file data in native object format in your preferred cloud storage account, which cloud-based business intelligence and analytical tools can operate on. For more details, see Analytics Connector AWS or Analytics Connector Azure.
The following compatibility details apply:
Analytics Connector version | Edge Appliance version | Source / Destination Storage Providers |
NAC 1.0 | 8.8 and higher | AWS / AWS |
Note: The source is always a Nasuni volume backed by cloud storage. The destination is always in cloud native format and not managed or monitored by Nasuni.
