Introduction

IBM Cloud Object Storage (COS), formerly Cleversafe, is IBM’s public and private cloud object storage offering. Nasuni enables customers to leverage IBM Cloud Object Storage for high-performance file storage. Using Nasuni’s object storage-based global file system with IBM Cloud Object Storage, customers can modernize legacy NAS and file server infrastructure and achieve new levels of cross-office file collaboration.

Prerequisites

This document assumes that the customer has the following in place:

  • Ensure network access is available and can reach the designated Object Storage service endpoints.

  • Port 443 (HTTPS) must be open between the Nasuni Edge Appliance and the object storage solution. For details, see Firewall and Port Requirements.

Tip: Only AWS Signature version 2 is supported for authenticating requests.

Tip: For IBM COS on-premises, ensure that S3 Virtual Host Suffix is configured for your IBM COS access pool.

  • Nasuni automatically creates buckets. All Nasuni bucket names start with “nasunifiler*", such as ”nasunifiler40c9bdb6-94c1-408c-a346-cf5fccde8517-13-0" .

  • Nasuni requires the object storage endpoint to support wildcard DNS entry. The DNS record should be of the form “*.<IBMCOS endpoint>.<FQDN>.com" .

  • Nasuni-supported certificates include the following:

    • Nasuni supports public cloud certificates or certificates issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA).

    • For IBM COS on-premises, Nasuni does not support self-signed certificates or private certificates.

  • When using IBM Cloud Object Storage on-premises, disable vault indexing and recovery listing.

IBM Cloud Object Storage Deployment

IBM Cloud Object Storage supports two deployment models:

  • On-premises.

  • Public cloud.

The Nasuni recommendation for both deployment models is for customers to use the Nasuni IBM COS connector. The Nasuni Cleversafe connector is only supported for legacy volumes that were created with IBM COS 3.8.3 or earlier.

Tip: For IBM COS Public Cloud, only the standard storage class is supported.

Nasuni Configuration

Nasuni supports IBM Cloud Object Storage using the Nasuni Connector for IBM Cloud Object Storage.

    • Name: A name for this set of credentials, which is used for display purposes, such as ObjectStorageCluster1.

    • Access Key ID: The IBM Cloud Object Storage Access Key ID for this set of credentials. “Vault Provisioner” access must be enabled.

    • Secret Access Key: The IBM Cloud Object Storage Secret Access Key for this set of credentials.

    • Hostname: IBM COS endpoint hostname.

    • Verify SSL Certificates: For self-signed certificates, certificates generated with a private root CA, or a default certificate: Off. For a fully valid SSL certificate: On.

    • Filers: The target Nasuni Edge Appliance(s).

  5. Click Save Credentials.

At this point, you can begin adding volumes to the Nasuni Edge Appliance.

Adding volumes

For the remaining options, select what is appropriate for this volume.

  1. Click Save.

This creates a new volume with IBM Cloud Object Storage.
