# Monitor and Troubleshoot Long-Running File IQ Scan and Aggregation Jobs

The Nasuni File IQ appliance automatically scans each connected volume every 24 hours. If the scanning and internal aggregation processes for a volume take more than 24 hours, a notification appears in the Nasuni Management Console (NMC) for that volume.

In addition to these NMC notifications, File IQ offers enhanced visibility into long-running scans and aggregation jobs through its dashboards:

**System Status Dashboard**: Use the Volume Scan Detailed Status panel to monitor volume-level scan progress.

**Service Support Dashboard**: Use the Current State of Volume Scan panel for real-time insights into ongoing scans.

> ***Note:****Extended scan durations are expected when a volume is first connected to the File IQ appliance or if there have been significant changes (for example, during a bulk file**import**to the volume). Volumes containing a large number of directories and files may require several days to complete initial scanning, depending on their size.*

## When File IQ Long-Running Job Notifications Appear

If a volume sync or a scan and aggregation process runs for more than 24 hours, the NMC displays a notification. These alerts are designed to keep you informed and enable proactive troubleshooting of extended operations.

### Types of Long-Running File IQ Notifications

The following are two types of long-running operation notifications:

**Long Sync Notification:**Triggered when a volume sync operation exceeds 24 hours.

**Long Scan and Aggregation Notification:**Triggered when the combined duration of a volume scan and its aggregation exceeds 24 hours.

### When Notifications Repeat

Notifications fire at the following intervals:

- After 24 hours of continuous operation.
- Repeat every 24 hours if the condition persists.

### What the Notification Includes

Each notification includes the following information:

- The name of the **File IQ appliance** that triggered the alert
- The **volume name** associated with the extended scan
- A **direct link to this support document** for further guidance
- **Quick access to the File IQ Service Support Dashboard** for deeper investigation

### Example Long-Running Job Notifications

**Long Sync Notification:**The Nasuni File IQ FS Metadata Service has detected a long-running volume sync: The scan execution for the Volume `<volume_name>` has been running since `<start_time>`. For more information, see the [**File IQ Service Support Dashboard**](/v1/docs/file-iq-dashboards#service-support)*.*

**Long Scan and Aggregation Notification:**The Nasuni File IQ FS Metadata Service has detected a long-running job execution (scan+aggregation): The job execution for the Volume `<volume_name>` has been running since `<start_time>`. For more information, see the [**File IQ Service Support Dashboard**](/v1/docs/file-iq-dashboards#service-support).

`<volume_name>` and `<start_time>` are dynamically replaced with actual values relevant to the alert.

## Monitor Long-Running Scan and Aggregation Progress

### Use the System Status Dashboard

The System Status dashboard can be used to check the current activity of the scan and aggregation process on a volume basis using the **Volume Scan Detailed Status** panel. This panel provides a list of activities on a volume basis with some statistics:

- Date and time of the last volume sync
- Last sync duration
- Date and time of the last scan
- Last scan duration
- Date and time of the last volume aggregation
- Last aggregation duration

For more information on using this panel to monitor the progress of the current scan, refer to the [System Status Dashboard documentation](/v1/docs/file-iq-dashboards#system-status-dashboard).

### Use the Service Support Dashboard

The **Volume Scan State Logs** on the **Service Support** dashboard (located under the by-default collapsed **Volume Aggregation History** section at the bottom) provide a more detailed view of current scan and aggregation activities. This view can be used when a long-running scan is in progress to ensure that the scan for a given volume progresses as expected. The volume scan and certain aggregations display detailed progress indicators, enabling you to estimate the percentage of the task completed.

For more information on using this panel to monitor the progress of the current scan, refer to the [Service Support Dashboard documentation](/v1/docs/file-iq-dashboards#service-support).
