# NEA Volume Configuration

You use volumes to manage data. There are two types of volumes: local volumes that are “owned” by the local Nasuni Edge Appliance, and remote volumes that belong to other Nasuni Edge Appliances.

If the NEA is not being managed by the NMC, a banner like the following appears: ![](https://cdn.document360.io/2adf6ce2-c120-4520-b135-0fc4463ddde3/Images/Documentation/win_use_nmc_15.png)

You can configure volume features using the Nasuni Management Console (NMC). See [NMC Guide](https://docs.nasuni.com/docs/nasuni-management-console).

Volume tasks that you can perform include the following:

- Viewing the information and properties of “owned” local and remote volumes. See [Volume List](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#volume-list).
- Adding or creating new "owned" local volumes using the SMB (CIFS) or NFS protocols. See [Create Volume](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#create-volume).
- Connecting to remote volumes. See [Connect to (and Disconnect from) a Remote Volume](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#connect-to-and-disconnect-from-a-remote-volume).
- Initiating a snapshot. See [Take Snapshot](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#take-snapshot).
- Viewing the Volume Properties for a volume. See [Volume details](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#volume-details).
- Changing the properties of volumes, including volume name and quota (maximum capacity). See [Changing volume name](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#changing-volume-name) and [Editing volume quota](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#editing-volume-quota).
- Creating and change SMB (CIFS) shares, NFS exports, and FTP/SFTP directories. See [Creating shares](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#creating-shares), [Creating exports](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#creating-exports), and [Creating FTP directories](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#creating-ftp-directories).
- Configuring snapshot scheduling. See [Snapshot Schedule](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#snapshot-schedule).
- Enabling and disabling access to snapshot directories. See [Snapshot Directory Access](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#snapshot-directory-access).
- Adding, disabling, and enabling encryption keys for volumes. See [Encryption Keys](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#encryption-keys).
- Configuring sync schedules. See [Sync Schedule](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#sync-schedule).
- Configuring file auditing for the volume. See [File System Auditing](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#file-system-auditing).
- Configuring alerts for files with specified name patterns. See [File System Auditing](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#file-system-auditing).
- Deleting a volume. See [Deleting a local volume](/v1/docs/nmc-volumes-page#deleting-a-local-volume).
