N2050 Nasuni Hardware Appliance Getting Started

Prev Next

Welcome to the Nasuni customer family. You now have full access to Nasuni’s software-defined platform that consolidates Network Attached Storage (NAS), distributed file servers, data protection, instant recovery, file archiving, multi-site file synchronization, and global file locking in one simple, scalable solution that can span the data center and the cloud. The Nasuni Edge Appliance N2050 hardware appliance is your connection to Nasuni, giving you multiple points to store and access file data. The Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance is easy to install, taking no more than 15 minutes to set up.

Summary

You can set up your Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance without console access. At the end of the setup process, there are several ways to determine the initial IP address of the Web-based user interface. After you install the hardware appliance, you configure and administer the Nasuni Edge Appliance using the Web user interface.

Network Configuration

The hardware appliance has one required and two optional ports to open and make available on your network:

  • 443 HTTPS (required) — This port is used when communicating with Nasuni.

  • 123 NTP (optional) — You can configure the Edge Appliance to use your local NTP time server. Depending on your network environment, you might need to open port 123 on your network to use the default NTP servers.

  • 25 SMTP (optional) — You can configure the Nasuni Edge Appliance to use your local SMTP server. Depending on your network environment, you might need to open port 25 on your network. This step is necessary for the Nasuni Edge Appliance to send alerts via SMTP, if you configure the alerts option.

Installation Procedure

Important: Installing third-party software on Nasuni appliances is not allowed.

To set up the Nasuni Edge Appliance N2050 hardware appliance:

  1. Install the mounting rails in the rack where you want to mount the Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance, then mount the hardware appliance on the rails. Refer to the hardware mounting documentation (included) for more details.

  2. Attach the power and network cables. Plug one network cable into any available port. After the initial installation is complete, you can configure additional ports. For details, see the Nasuni Edge Appliance Administration Guide. For the best power redundancy, provide each power supply with power from separate sources.

  3. Connect the Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance to your network. If the automatic negotiation of link speed between the NIC and the switch does not work, set link speed manually.

  4. Power on the Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance. The first boot might take longer than later boots.
Caution: Do not reboot or power off appliance during first boot. After first boot completes, you may reboot or power off appliance, as needed, following the proper procedure for doing so.

  5. Configure the iDRAC remote support feature, using the console service menu. DO NOT use the Dell System Setup F2 procedure, which configures the iDRAC default user ID2, which is disabled by Nasuni at bootup. Connect the iDRAC dedicated port to the network, and follow the instructions in the iDRAC Configuration Procedure.
Note: iDRAC does not have DHCP enabled by default.

  6. Determine or set the IP address of the Nasuni Edge Appliance in one of the following ways:

    • If DHCP is available on the network, make note of the IP address that appears on the LCD panel.

Tip: To view the LCD status bar, make sure that the bezel is installed on the front of the hardware appliance.

    • If DHCP is not available, set a temporary IP address to the Edge Appliance UI to configure a Static IP address:

Connect a monitor and keyboard. To enter the service menu, press Enter. Enter username service and password service. Enter editnetwork. Enter settempip. Follow prompts to enter a temporary network IP address and netmask. Enter settempgateway. Follow prompts to enter a temporary network gateway.Type quit. Use this temporary IP address in your browser to access the Edge Appliance UI, where you can configure a static IP address. The static IP address can be the same as the temporary IP address.

  7. Provide this IP address to the Nasuni Edge Appliance administrator to complete the software configuration using a Web browser. Continue procedures in the Nasuni Edge Appliance Initial Configuration Guide.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the Nasuni Edge Appliance N2050 hardware appliance does not display the IP address of its Web-based interface within 10 minutes after being powered on, then shut down the Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance, and attach a monitor and keyboard. After powering the Nasuni Edge Appliance hardware appliance back on, watch the boot sequence. If the boot sequence does not end on a screen displaying the IP address of the Web-based user interface, then record any errors that are output to the console and contact Nasuni Technical Support.
