Nasuni Services Briefly Impacted by AWS Outage

Early this morning, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major outage centered in its US-EAST-1 (Northern Virginia) region, beginning around 3:11 a.m. ET. The issue stemmed from a DNS and service-endpoint failure that cascaded through multiple AWS services, causing global disruptions across several major platforms including Snapchat, Fortnite, Venmo, Robinhood, and Signal, among others.  

Because US-EAST-1 serves as a core hub for many cloud-hosted systems, the impact extended well beyond North America, affecting both consumer and enterprise applications worldwide. AWS confirmed the event was not related to a cyberattack, and recovery efforts began within a few hours, with most services restored by mid-morning ET.  

Nasuni uses AWS US-EAST-1 for several of its NOC services and was able to successfully move those affected services to us-east-2 and us-west-2, so that all services were back up and running later in the morning.

Prior to Nasuni transitioning its services to other AWS regions, Nasuni admins would have seen errors as their NEAs attempted to complete snapshots, to backup their configuration to nasuni.com, or to communicate with the NOC. No data was lost, and the snapshots and configuration backups were retried and completed once the Nasuni service was moved to a functioning AWS region. There should have been no impact on data being read from or written to the local cache.

Communication between NMC and NEAs was impacted, and NEAs might have shown as “offline”, although they were still accessible for end users.

Additionally, customers using the Virginia GFL service may have seen IO errors during the time period before Nasuni moved its services. Customers of the other 5 GFL services in Oregon, Singapore, Syndey, Ireland, and Frankfurt were unaffected.
